There are many legends about knights and their courageous
deeds. Some legends include dragons, dungeons and magic, which made
the knights seem even more heroic. Knights were in fact the
superheroes of the Middle Ages. One of the best known legends is
King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. King Arthur and his knights were said to be the bravest and most chivalrous of all. Arthur fatally wounded when defending his kingdom against the Saxons. Legend has it that Arthur was carried away to a magical island called Avalon. But did King Arthur really exist? King Arthur was probably a sixth-century war leader who helped the British kingdoms fight against the Saxons. Over time people repeated and added to the story of King Arthur and made it more and more heroic and mystical. In 1136, Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote down many of the stories about King Arthur. These were very popular and real life knights learned how they should behave. Many other stories were written about knights and their adventures and these stories remain popular to today.
