The Middle Ages

A Grade 5 project by Matthew Lapinsky

The Middle Ages started with the fall of Western Rome and ended with the Renaissance, lasting from about 400 AD to 1450 AD.

This period started with the creation of barbarian kingdoms which grew to become the nation states of western Europe. During this time, the Roman Catholic Church became very popular, with Rome and the Pope being the centre of the religion. In this period, the wealthy landlords governed over huge lands. A feudal system was created with the peasants on the bottom. The peasants had a very miserable life; they could not own land and were forced to work for the lord. In return, they were given food and allowed to live on the land. During the Middle Ages, there were wars, peasant revolts, plagues, floods and religious crusades.  The most well known group were the knights.  To this day people remained fascinated by the life and adventures of the knights.

When you think of the Middle Ages one of the first things that pops into your mind is knights.  Knights were  much more than the military during the Middle Ages.  Knights had high social ranks and were chivalrous to their friends and enemies alike.
